Happy Birthday Feedback

Is it ever too late to give feedback? At what point does delayed feedback lose its luster? Consider the Happy Birthday approach. When is the best time to sing a happy birthday song to someone? On their birthday, of course! Now, if you see someone the day after their birthday, you might say, "Happy belated birthday!" which is still impactful. After a week, "Happy belated birthday!" could still work. Depending on the person, some may celebrate a birthday month, so a delayed birthday acknowledgment may have some impact. What if I came to you three months after your birthday and said, "Hey! You had a birthday!" How impactful is that? Even though it is a thoughtful thing to say, it can be detrimental and be considered inconsiderate. The best time to tell someone happy birthday is also the best time to give feedback – when it happens!

You will need more than the end of a project, quarter, or annual review to help your team succeed. Set up triggers or stopping points to give feedback. This could be a mid-project review. Many agile teams have a quick daily stand-up check-in for quick feedback, and some teams have emotional triggers like "When I begin feeling overwhelmed by this project, I need to discuss with my team by saying this…"

Untimely feedback breeds untimely results.

So, here's what I want you to do: schedule time in your calendar to give meaningful feedback.
